Botswana - Chobe River

Many people do not know, that this river begins its existence as a small mountain spring in Angola, where it is known as the Kwando. From there, it travels great distances, before it reaches Botswana and then becomes the Linyanti.

It finally becomes the Chobe at the border post of Ngoma, from where it continues to run along Botswana’s northern border before meeting the mighty Zambezi and tumbling over the precipice at Victoria Falls.

When the river reaches the national park’s northern border, it has become a broad, twisting mass of water that snakes its way through swampland. The chobe river attracts an unbelievable density of different animal species, including huge herds of elephant (which can often be seen crossing the river) and buffalo, as well as countless hippos, crocodiles, lions and birds. Especially the birdlife is extraordinary, particularly in months of September -March. The wide banks and lush grass attract rare antelope such as red lechwe and puku to the water’s edge. The river is also home to over 90 species of fish.

For us, the Chobe river is one of the finest all year round, prime Safari destinations in the whole of Africa. Kasane is the perfect location and starting point for trips by boat on the river, or by 4x4 vehicle into the Chobe Nationalpark. From the airport it’s just a short 45-60min flight to the Okavango Delta, the Vic Falls are also not to far away and can be easily visited on a day trip from there. If you call yourself a wildlife enthusiast, and especially if you’re a keen photographer, you have to visit at least once in your lifetime. But we would also recommend to come more often and in different times of the year, especially if you combine Chobe with the Okavango Delta, Savuti etc.
