Definition of "close" ;-) After lunch we were back by foot to our room in Zambia and found this huge Elephant bull doin' his thing right next to our room. He seemed relaxed, but we also learned that elephants here are bit different from elephants we encountered over the years in SA or Botswana for example - they seem to be less friendly here. So we decided to walk a different route and keep our distance, always with a plan B in mind just in case the bull reacts aggressive towards us - better be safe than sorry 😊 He was definitely not so happy with us being that close, so as soon as we reached the entrance of our room he came towards us to demonstrate his massive size and strength, which was indeed a very impressive show. But he never showed any real aggression, just demonstrated a bit of territorial behaviour. He was standing there, ca. 4-5 meters away from us, for at least 15 more minutes before he slowly walked away ... It's a male impala's role to looks after a group of females and produce offspring. But competition is tough and these few spots are heavily fought over. The ones that don't succeed (for the moment in time) form alliances with their competitors which protects them from predator attacks. When on Safari most people tend to only be out looking for the big 5, especially Elephants, Lions and Leopards are extremely high on the clients wish list. Which is understandable to be honest, BUT also the smaller or less formidable animals make for fantastic subjects. It's highly recommend to stay a while with baboons or vervet monkey, they are alway fun to match and it's always something going on.
